Hybridized by Brad Jalbet On April 6, 2009, I presented the City of New Westminster with its own unique rose in a dedication ceremony at City Hall. 'Royal City Rose' was bred by yours truly here at Select Roses in Langley, and was an eight-year labour of love. I'm very proud that this rose will have special significance for New Westminster. It's a beautiful city and I can't think of a better way to commemorate its 150th anniversary than with its very own rose. Others think so too! This rose is burning up the media! Check out these links to local stories about New Westminster's very own Royal City Rose: New flower marks city's anniversary - Steve Whysall, Vancouver Sun Royal City Rose: a hardy rose for a most special occasion - GardenWise Online Ten years in the making - Theresa McManus, The Record Everything's coming up rosy in the Royal City - Theresa McManus, The Record BLOG New Royal City Rose is a Star Performer - Steve Whysall, Vancouver Sun, In The Garden BLOG Royal City's got a brand new Rose - Steve Whysall, Vancouver Sun Only in New Westminster - Theresa McManus, The Record, Blog People are even Twittering about us!

About 'Royal City Rose' 'Royal City Rose' is a cross between 'Pretty Lady' and 'Living Easy', two floribundas highly rated for their free flowering, disease resistance, and strong roots. 'Royal City' shares these traits, producing peachy-apricot hued blooms on a shrub that has amazing vigour and disease resistance. It can be lovingly pruned, or sheared back with hedge clippers, and still grow strong. 'Royal City Rose' has also proven itself to be cold hardy, having withstood -17 degree Celsius temperatures in our fields this past winter. Ordering Your Own Royal City Rose The City of New Westminster offered 150 rose vouchers, in honour of its 150th Anniversary, to New Westminster residents only (limit two per person) on April 7, 2009. The plants are to be released in June, potted, when they are leafed out and in bud. The initial 150 roses sold out within 48 hours! Visit the nursery to purchase your Royal City Rose spring 2010. We have a nice crop of 1-2 gallon Royal City roses coming along in the greenhouse. They are at the ideal stage to grow and flower in your garden this summer! |
